Thermal performance benchmarking and test methodology for passive coolers

About

I build repeatable rigs to test coolers against heat, humidity, and opening cycles, then translate the data into simple pack rules. My goal is to strip out hype and isolate variables so readers can match a cooler and loadout to the trip, not the brochure.

Background

On a July desert camp, our soft cooler tapped out by noon. That night I bolted sensors to a plywood rig, weighing melt by the gram. The next weekend, one extra pre-chill and a tighter pack saved a whole bag of ice—and dinner stayed safe to day three.

Perspective

I overvalue thermodynamic efficiency and durability over weight, price, and aesthetics.
